NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Monroe University-New Rochelle Director of Athletics Luis Melendez has announced the hiring of Leandro Perez as the new head coach of the Monroe Mustangs men's volleyball program on Monday.
Perez joins the Mustangs after serving as an assistant coach with Kean University's NCAA Division III men's volleyball program, where he helped the Cougars capture the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championship during the 2025-26 season. Perez was also recognized as part of the Kean University Coaching Staff of the Year for the 2025-26 campaign.
"I am extremely excited and honored to join Monroe University-New Rochelle and take on the opportunity to lead the men's volleyball program," Perez said. "I look forward to building a culture centered around hard work, discipline, development and accountability while helping our student-athletes grow both on and off the court. I am grateful for the opportunity to represent Monroe and excited about what we can accomplish together."

"His commitment to player development, his championship experience at Kean and his ability to connect with athletes made him an excellent fit for our men's volleyball program. We believe he has the vision and leadership to build a strong foundation and take our program to new heights."
In addition to his collegiate coaching experience, Perez has worked extensively in player development at the club and youth levels. He has coached boys' and girls' volleyball players ages 7–18 with Central Jersey Volleyball Academy, while also coaching high school athletes with NJ Premier. His coaching experience also includes time with Kearny High School, where he worked with freshman, junior varsity and varsity teams.
Perez's coaching background also includes experience with the GEVA Regional Team Development Program, where he has worked with high-performing youth athletes on advanced skill development, game strategy and preparation for regional and national competition.
Prior to beginning his coaching career at the collegiate level, Perez was a student-athlete at New Jersey City University, competing as a libero, outside hitter and setter. During his playing career, he earned Dean's List recognition and helped NJCU capture a Skyline Conference Championship in 2021.
Perez earned his degree in Mathematics from New Jersey City University, where he was a Top of the Class Scholarship recipient and earned Dean's List recognition.
