Men's Volleyball Downs Union in Five Sets, 3-2

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. –The Monroe University men's volleyball team (11-7 overall) defeated Union College in five sets (25-23, 25-23, 17-25, 15-25, 16-14) on Wednesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED

·      Monroe edged Union in kills in the opening set with 11 versus Union's nine.

·      The Mustangs would hold off a Union comeback late in the set after they cut the Mustangs' lead to 23-22 before the Mustangs tacked on the final two points to win the set.

·      In the second set, the Mustangs tacked on 12 kills while holding Union to nine.

· Union scored five straight points towards the end of the set, tying the set at 20 before the Mustangs squeaked out the set win by tallying back-to-back points and eventually winning the set.

·      Union outmatched the Mustangs in the third and fourth sets, holding Monroe to just 16 kills total in the two sets combined.

·      In the third set, Union took over, taking a 16-7 lead and never giving up the lead to result in a 25-17 set victory.

·      Same went in the fourth set as the Mustangs came closer as Union had a 16-13 lead but Union kept scoring and took the set 25-15.

·      In the fifth set, both sides were neck and neck, each scoring points, but Monroe came out on top, scoring the last four points to take the 16-14 set victory.

STATS AND NOTES

·      Monroe leads the all-time series against Union 10-3.

·      Yensy Rodriguez led the Mustangs in kills with 19 on the day.

·      Hudson Irving tallied 36 assists on the day, which is the fourth time this season he's tallied 30+ assists in a game.

·      The Mustangs return to action on Saturday, March 21, when they travel to face Nassau CC and Monroe University-Bronx team. The first match starts at noon.
