Monroe University–New Rochelle is proud to announce a transformative step in the evolution of its athletics program: the transition from NJCAA Division I competition toward NCAA Division II membership.
This strategic initiative reflects the University’s continued commitment to academic excellence, student-athlete development, and competitive athletics. By pursuing NCAA Division II membership, Monroe University–New Rochelle aims to provide an elevated collegiate experience while aligning with institutions that emphasize success in the classroom, in competition, and in the community.
“This is a defining moment for Monroe University–New Rochelle Athletics,” said Luis Melendez, Assistant Vice President - Director of Athletics. “Our transition to NCAA Division II represents the natural progression of our program. We are committed to providing our student-athletes with greater opportunities for growth, visibility, and long-term success both on and off the field.”
Transition Timeline
Monroe University–New Rochelle will apply for NCAA Division II membership by October 1, 2026. As part of this process, the University is proactively aligning its policies, procedures, and athletic operations with NCAA Division II rules and regulations.
Pending acceptance into the NCAA Division II provisional membership process, the anticipated timeline is as follows:
- Provisional Year One: 2027–2028
- Provisional Year Two: 2028–2029
- Full Active NCAA Division II Membership: 2029–2030
Throughout the provisional period, Monroe University–New Rochelle will continue enhancing its compliance framework, athletic facilities, and student-athlete support services to meet NCAA standards.
“This transition is about more than moving divisions, it’s about building a sustainable and competitive future,” Melendez added. “We are focused on ensuring that our infrastructure, our coaching staff, and our student support systems meet the highest standards expected at the NCAA Division II level.”
