NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Monroe University women's basketball team (21-6 overall) downed No. 6 CCBC-Essex (21-3 overall) 93-61 for their 15
th straight victory on Saturday afternoon as the Mustangs honored their 11 sophomores on Sophomore Day.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Mustangs dominated the opening quarter scoring 24 points while holding the Knights to just 12.
- Sophomore Hellary De Los Santos led the Mustangs with 10 points with contributions from Bre Jefferson, Skylah Kemp, and Eniyah Stinnette as well.
- Monroe continued dominated going on a 30-7 for10:25 between the first and second quarters as the Mustangs went 12-21 from the field during the run while holding the Knights to 2-12 from the field.
- In the second quarter the Mustangs held the Knights to just 12 more points while the Mustangs tallied another 24 points to close the half with the Mustangs ahead 48-24.
- Monroe went 4-12 from three-point distance in the second quarter while two Mustangs closed the half putting up double digit points, Jefferson (13) and De Los Santos (10).
- In the third quarter, the Mustangs dominated from the three-point line going 6-12 with three coming from Jefferson.
- The Mustangs went 10-24 from the field and scored 28 points while the Knights tallied 22 points going 7-20 from the field.
- In the fourth quarter, Monroe scored 17 points while holding the Knights to 15.
- De Los Santos led the way in the quarter scoring four points for the Mustangs and adding a pair of rebounds.
- The Mustangs also held the Knights to just one made three-pointer in the quarter which led to the eventual 93-61 victory.
STATS AND NOTES
- This is the first win for the Mustangs against CCBC-Essex in program history.
- De Los Santos tallied her 14thdouble-double this season tallying 19 points and 18 rebounds.
- Bre Jefferson led the scoring for the Mustangs tallying 24 points while going 5-9 from three-point distance and 9-22 from the field.
- The win is the Mustangs 15th straight victory this season.
- Monroe improves to 21-6 on the season while CCBC-Essex drops to 21-3 on the year.
- The Mustangs celebrated their 11 sophomores Bre Jefferson, Fabiana Poindujour, Sydney Husky, Skylah Kemp, Eniyah Stinnette, Dunja Miletic, Kaylyn Lelie, Astou Diongue, Alex Stewart, Adela Cecunjanin, and Hellary De Los Santos as it was Sophomore Day for the team.

The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as the Monroe University marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I).
