CHARLOTTE, N.C., April 9, 2024 – Sophomore forward
Emma Wilson-Saltos of the Monroe College Mustangs women's basketball team was announced as a member of the 2023-24 NJCAA Division I Women's Basketball All-America Team on Tuesday. Wilson was named as an Honorable Mention after a terrific second season with the Mustangs.
Wilson-Saltos becomes the fifth Mustang to earn NJCAA All-America honors since Monroe made the jump up to NJCAA Division I. After not having an All-American in 2022-23, the Mustangs have now had an All-American in four of the past five seasons in which they played (Monroe did not compete in 2020-21), joining former teammate
Olivia Medford (2022) as well as Cheyenne Talbot (2020) and Aneisha Lyons (2019). Shania Johnson was the first Mustang to earn Division I All-American honors back in 2017.
Wilson-Saltos had a fantastic year for the Mid-Atlantic District Champion Mustangs in 2023-24. She averaged a double-double on the season with 14.4 points and 11.9 rebounds per game. Wilson-Saltos finished the 2023-24 campaign ranked No. 2 in the NJCAA with 176 offensive rebounds, No. 9 with 356 total rebounds and No. 11 with 11.9 rebounds per game. Her 5.9 offensive rebounds per game were No. 6 in the nation. Wilson-Saltos concluded the season with 17 double-doubles in 30 games played. She also led the Mustangs with a .488 field-goal percentage and finished the year with a team-high 44 blocked shots.
Wilson-Saltos was a clear difference-maker for the Mustangs throughout the season and established herself as one of the best rebounders in the nation. She set the table for her season back on Nov. 5 in a neutral-site matchup against Chesapeake College in which she established a Monroe College Division I record with 25 rebounds in the win. Wilson-Saltos had a stretch during the season in which she registered seven straight double-doubles, going on to accomplish this feat 11 times in 12 games. In total, Wilson-Saltos had double-digit points in 24 of her 30 games played and double-digit rebounds in 19 contests.
The Mustangs had a highly successful season under first-year head coach
Camille McLellan. The Mustangs finished with a 19-11 overall record, winning the Region 20 Championship tournament before claiming the Mid-Atlantic District Championship over Spartanburg Methodist College to earn the team's third straight trip to the NJCAA Div. I Women's Basketball Championship. The Mustangs came in as the No. 24 seed in the tournament for the third year in a row, nearly upsetting No. 9 Trinity Valley before a late comeback by the Cardinals resulted in a 69-65 defeat for the Mustangs.
