BOSTON, Mass., February 10, 2023 – The Monroe College Mustangs men's track and field team's distance medley relay team broke the program's indoor record, while the women impressed on Day 1 of the David Hemery Valentine Invitational, hosted by Boston University on Friday.
The men's distance medley relay team of
Kgaogelo Moloisi,
Vadley Sylvester,
Prince Mcabelo and
Karim Belmahdi broke Monroe's indoor DMR record with a time of 9:50.52 on Friday. The time qualifies the Mustangs for the event at the 2023 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, and currently stands as the second fastest time in the NJCAA this season. The Mustangs took eighth place out of 31 teams in the DMR on Friday.
Shaquka Tyrell earned her third qualification for the NJCAA Championships on Friday. In the 1,000-meter run, Tyrell clocked in with a time of 3:06.78 to surpass the qualifying standard and earn her spot in the national meet.
Kayla Johnson managed to improve her qualifying time for the 800-meter run on Friday. She completed the race in 2:19.31 for a new personal- and season-best time, defeating her previous time by nearly three seconds.
Zothile Mbhamali ran in Saturday's 3,000-meter run. She earned a new personal-best time at 10:56.84, shaving 30 seconds off her previous best time.
Kahliyah Smith and
Vegonia Jean-Baptiste each ran in both the 60-meter dash and 200-meter dash events on Friday. Smith ran the 60m in 8.20 seconds, while Jean-Baptiste crossed the line in 8.59 seconds. Smith then ran a personal-best time of 25.93 seconds in the 200m, while Jean-Baptiste did the same with a time of 27.25 seconds.
The David Hemery Valentine Invitational continues on Saturday, Feb. 11. The day will feature the men's events, as well as the women's distance medley relay. The action begins at 10:30 a.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well the Monroe College marching band and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 11 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
