Monroe Women’s Basketball Takes two of three at Lake Michigan Classic over the Weekend

Mustangs Register Wins over Lansing and Cuyahoga

Benton Harbor, Mich. – The Monroe College women's basketball team played three games over the weekend and came away with a pair of wins and one loss at the Lake Michigan Classic in Benton Harbor, Michigan.  The Mustangs recorded wins over Lansing Community College (67-56) and Cuyahoga C.C. (84-77), but fell in the opener to Oakland Community College, 80-65.
 
The team opened play with an 80-65 loss to Oakland.  The loss dropped the team's record to 1-8 with two games left in the tournament.  The two contests would turn out to be victories for the Mustangs.
 
Monroe rebounded on Saturday by defeated Lansing C.C., 67-56.  Strong first half play helped the Mustangs build a ten point lead when Gabrielle Jubinville made a three-pointer with 0:58 remaining to make the score 39-29.  The score at the half was 39-32 at the break.
 
The lead got up to 11 points when a pair of foul shots from Samantha Hines made the score 43-32 with 8:55 left in the third quarter.  From there, Monroe went into hibernation, as Lansing came back to tie the score.  Eventually, the Mustangs led at the end of the quarter, 51-45.
 
A Breanna Dennis jumper at 5:28 in the fourth iced the game for Monroe.  The lead got as large as 13 on two Jubinville freebies.  The team went on to win 67-56.  In the victory, Jubinville had a double-double with 25 points and 17 rebounds (including ten offensive).  Dennis had 19, while Hines finished with 14 points.
 
The final game of the tournament pitted Monroe against Cuyahoga Community College of Ohio.  The Mustangs won that one, 84-77.
 
Monroe built an insurmountable lead in the first half, outscoring Cuyahoga 58-33 at the half.  The cushion was as large as 27 on a three-point-play from Breanna Dennis inside of three minutes.  The second half saw Cuyahoga come charging back tie the game, but the Mustangs responded in the closing minutes of the fourth to secure the triumph.  A Venesa Jordan layup with 3:59 left broke a 71-all tie.  A foul shot from Camilla Kilinc with 0:22 left secured the win.
 
Samantha Hines finished with 20 points and 14 rebounds.  It was her sixth double-double of the season.  Camilla Kilinc had a season-best 16 points on 4-8 shooting from three point land.  Destini Green totaled 13 while dennis and Jordan poured in 11.
 
The Monroe College women's basketball team returns to action on Thursday, December 10, when they host Orange County Community College.  The jump ball is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
