HAMPTON, Va.–The Monroe University Mustangs baseball team (3-13 overall) defeated Virgínia Peninsula (3-7 overall) spilt the series finale double-header, taking game one 5-3 and falling in game two 7-2 on Saturday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 1)
· The Mustangs jumped out to a 1-0 lead off an RBI single by Matt DeFisher, which scored Isaiah Gibbs.
· The Gators responded in the bottom of the first inning with a stolen base to home to even the score at 1-1.
· In the top of the second inning, the Mustangs tacked on two runs courtesy of a DeFisher RBI walk and a Nair Jamanika RBI walk, putting the Mustangs ahead 3-1.
· In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Gators added a run off a double play which scored a runner to cut the Mustangs' lead to 3-2.
· In the same inning, the Gators added a run off a passed ball to even the game at 3-3.
· In the top of the eighth inning, the Mustangs sealed the game with a two-RBI single by Alejandro Bernard to give the Mustangs a 5-3 victory.
Game 2
· The Mustangs took an early lead in game two with Jaminka ripping an RBI single to put the Mustangs ahead 1-0 in the top of the first inning.
· The Gators tacked on five runs in the bottom of the third inning off a two-RBI single and a solo-RBI single to give the Gators a 4-1 lead. The Gators added one more run in the inning off a passed ball, which scored a run to give the Gators a 5-1 lead.
· In the bottom of the fifth, the Gators added two more runs off an error by the right fielder to put them ahead 7-1.
· In the top of the seventh, the Mustangs added one more run off an RBI groundout by Justin Parson to make the final score 7-2 in favor of the Gators.
STATS AND NOTES
· DeFisher finished the doubleheader, tallying five RBIs on the day.
· Jamanika had a two-RBI day between both games, going 2-6 on the day.
· The Mustangs tallied 10 hits in game two and six hits in game one.
· In game one, Mason Berna received the win, going 3.1 innings and allowing just one run.
UP NEXT
The Mustangs return to action on Sunday, March 1, when they travel to face Delaware Technical Community College in a doubleheader. The first game begins at 12:00 p.m.
