New Rochelle, NY – The Monroe University baseball team fell to University of Connecticut at Avery Point in a doubleheader on Saturday, losing game one, 4-2, before dropping the second game of the doubleheader, 8-6.
Game one saw the Mustangs fall into a 4-0 hole and struggle to climb out of it. Sophomore
Anthony Fernandez recorded an RBI single in the third before freshman
Ryan Marchina scored in a run on a sacrifice fly, but that was all the scoring Monroe would get in the close loss.
Freshman
Victor Ceballos hurled 3.1 shutout innings in relief to keep the Pointers at bay, but the Mustangs failed to get runners into scoring position in the later innings. Freshman
Nair Jamanika produced two hits in the loss.
In game two, Monroe flipped the script and jumped out in front, 5-2, heading into the sixth. Avery Point, however, went on to score six runs across the final two frames to snatch victory from the hands of defeat.
Early on, the Mustangs were firing on all cylinders with Fernandez and freshmen
Dirso Melendez and
Derek Lebron recording RBIs, with Lebron tripling in two runners in the bottom of the fifth to produce the 5-2 lead.
Avery Point proceeded to knock in run after run in the sixth and seventh. And while Monroe made it interesting late down two runs with the tying run at first with one out, it couldn't bring the runners home as the team fell to 11-22 on the year.
Eight of the nine starters recorded hits, with Melendez producing multiple hits in the loss.
