New Rochelle, NY – The Monroe University baseball team dropped both games of its Sunday doubleheader against Harford Community College. The Mustangs fell in five innings in game one, 12-1, before losing game two, 7-0.
Competitive in both games early on, Monroe didn't have the legs to compete with the Fighting Owls for the entirety of the contest. Both starting pitchers — freshmen
Kyle Mandirola and
Ricardo Feliz — were dealt the loss as Monroe never led today.
In game one, after Harford took a 1-0 lead, freshman
Dirso Melendez drove in the tying run on a sacrifice fly. Aside from that, the offense was stagnant as they failed to put a runner in scoring position the rest of the way.
Freshmen
Nair Jamanika and
Gavin Marchese recorded hits in the opening matchup.
Despite not scoring in game two, Monroe outhit Harford, 5-3. Trailing 1-0, the Mustangs threatened in the third inning, but came up empty-handed in the frame. Another opportunity with runners on the corners in the sixth was thwarted.
Monroe's next chance to get in the win column will come in a three-game series at Westchester Community College. Game one on Friday will begin at 2:00 pm.

The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as the Monroe University marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
