New Rochelle, NY – The Monroe University baseball team swept its doubleheader against Paramount Academy on Tuesday, winning game one 13-8 before staving off the Grizzlies in a thrilling 8-5 victory.
Paramount gave Monroe all it could handle in both games, but the Mustangs prevailed with timely clutch plays on defense and efficient offense.
In game one, the Grizzlies pushed the Mustangs early, taking a 4-2 lead. However, a four-run second kept the home team in front for the remainder of the contest.
Sophomores
Anthony Fernandez and
Ronald Almanzar — who were recognized in between games along with their fellow sophomores — singled in runs to kickstart the hot inning. Freshman
Nair Jamanika then singled in Fernandez to put the Mustangs in front 6-4.
Fernandez once again delivered in the third with an RBI single, scoring freshman
Jesus Nieves.
A troublesome sixth was no problem for Monroe as it staved off the Grizzlies from tying or taking the lead and turned around to score three more runs in the bottom half of the frame. This set up freshman
Julio Gonzalez to close out the ball game with 1.2 shutout innings in relief.
In game two, the two sides entered the sixth inning tied at five. With the bases-loaded and one out, freshman
Ricardo Feliz worked out of the jam with a crucial strikeout and subsequent flyout to left.
Monroe then took its turn with the bases-loaded, only this time it was converted into runs as freshman
Gavin Marchese cleared the bases with a double to left. Feliz then shut down Paramount in the seventh to earn the win.
The Mustangs will head to Maryland for their next doubleheader against Allegany College of Maryland. Friday's two-game series will begin at noon.
