Cumberland, MD – The Monroe University baseball team earned a convincing 14-0 victory over Allegany College of Maryland in the first leg of Friday's doubleheader. The second game was postponed in the fifth due to inclement weather.
It was a complete showing from the Mustangs as the offense and defense were top tier.
Sophomore
Emmanuel Ramos pitched a gem, allowing just four hits and striking out three over six shutout innings. Freshman
Devin Ryan then shut down the Trojans to close out the seventh and secure the shutout.
The duo on the mound were backed by a tremendous offensive showcase that saw the Mustangs record 17 hits — the most in a game this season since March 1 against Paramount Academy.
Every starter joined in on the hit parade, with freshman
Jesus Nieves going 4-for-5 out of the leadoff spot to set the table. Sophomore
Ronald Almanzar recorded three hits and drove in six runs — his second such performance in the past week.
Almanzar got the scoring started with a single through the right side of the infield. Freshman
Dirso Melendez then doubled down the right field line to make it 3-0 early.
Another three-run inning came in the second as Almanzar hit an opposite field three-run homer.
The extra-base hits kept on coming as freshman
Ryan Marchina tripled in a run in the third before sophomore
Anthony Fernandez made it 9-0 on a solo shot to right center. The Mustangs then padded their lead with a five-run seventh.
With all the offensive fireworks, the defense was equally as impressive to round out the all-around performance. Monroe turned two double plays and Ramos picked off two runners in the fourth.
Monroe will take on Potomac State College next in a Saturday doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
