Baseball Falls In Saturday Doubleheader At Erie

Buffalo, NY – The Monroe University baseball team suffered a doubleheader loss to Erie Community College on Saturday, dropping game one, 18-5, before falling in game two, 12-2.

It was night and day from Friday's offensive output for the Mustangs as they scored seven runs on ten hits across the two contests. Erie bounced back from the jump, evening the series with two five-inning run-rule victories.

An 11-0 start to game one put Monroe in a massive hole early. A positive third inning saw freshmen Juan Garcia and Marcus Mercado — who hit a three-run home run — pick up RBIs. That was all the scoring Monroe would get as the Kats put up 18 runs on the pitching staff.

In game two, another big first inning put Erie in the driver's seat. Sophomore Anthony Fernandez and freshman Derek Lebron doubled in runs in the third and fourth inning, respectively, but a seven-run bottom half of the fourth for Erie put the game out of reach.

Despite an impressive first day in upstate New York, Monroe departs from its four-game road trip with a 2-2 split. Its next opportunity will come on Tuesday at home against Paramount Academy. The doubleheader will begin at noon.
