Lincroft, NJ – The Monroe University baseball team dropped its single game road trip to Brookdale Community College, 15-13, on Wednesday.
It was a solid offensive outing for the Mustangs as they drove in 13 runs on 14 hits, but the Jersey Blues had an equally impactful day from the offense to snatch victory from the hands of defeat.
Monroe took an early 6-1 lead as sophomore
Anthony Fernandez, who finished with four hits, got the scoring started with an RBI double. Fernandez then took Brookdale deep in his second at-bat, solely making it a 3-1 game in the second frame.
A three-run third, spearheaded by a two-RBI single by freshman
Jesus Nieves, gave the Mustangs a considerable lead in the early going. However, Brookdale matched Monroe's offensive output, eventually taking a 12-6 lead by the end of the fourth.
The Mustangs made it a game again with a four-run fifth, highlighted by a two-run blast from freshman
Marcus Mercado. Two more runs crossed home plate in the next frame, tying the game up at 12. But the Jersey Blues outscored the visitors by two the rest of the way to emerge victorious.
Nieves joined Fernandez with multiple hits, while freshman
Dirso Melendez recorded two doubles in the loss.
Monroe will travel to Buffalo, NY, for its next handful of games — a four-game road trip against Erie Community College. Game one of Friday's doubleheader will begin at noon.
