New Rochelle, NY - The Monroe University baseball team dropped its doubleheader affair on Sunday to Mercer County Community College. Both games were close, with the Mustangs losing in game one, 10-7, before falling in the second game of the doubleheader, 6-4.
A five-run third inning in the first contest helped Monroe take an early advantage. Freshmen Nair Jamanika, Gavin Marchese and Tai Vic Tromp all collected RBIs as the Mustangs took a 5-3 lead into the fourth.
The two sides traded runs in the fifth before the game unraveled for the home team. The Vikings scored five runs over the final two innings to put an end to Monroe's defense of home field. Freshman William Rangel was dealt the loss.
In game two, Mercer County held onto a narrow 5-4 lead after the two teams alternated four-run frames in the third. In that inning, a two-RBI triple by sophomore Anthony Fernandez got the Mustangs rolling before sophomore Ronald Almanzar doubled in two.
But that was the only offense the Mustangs would get in the game as Mercer County tacked on one more run to seal the contest. Freshman Kyle Mandirola pitched the entire game in the loss, allowing six runs on eight hits.
Monroe will have a week-long break before returning to Flowers Park to take on Roxbury Community College in a doubleheader on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
