New Rochelle, NY – The Monroe University baseball team split its doubleheader against Lackawanna College on Saturday. The Mustangs defeated the Falcons, 6-5, in game one before falling, 11-3, in the second contest.
The two sides traded leads in the opening matchup, but a crucial three-run sixth after trailing 5-3 shifted the momentum in Monroe's favor.
It started with an RBI double by freshman
Nair Jamanika. Fellow freshman
Jesus Nieves then tied the game up at five by singling in Jamanika. The Mustangs then delivered in the clutch as freshman
Marcus Mercado singled up the middle to score Nieves and give Monroe a 6-5 lead.
After 5.2 solid innings on the mound from freshman
Sebastian Rivera, sophomore
Emmanuel Ramos closed out the ballgame with 1.1 innings of one-hit ball. Ramos earned the first save of the season for the Mustangs in process.
Game two was Lackawanna's to lose as they went up big early. A 5-0 lead was tough to overcome for the Mustangs as Mercado, Nieves and freshman
Gavin Marchese supplied the only offense.
The Falcons and Mustangs will meet again on April 15.
Monroe's next opponent will be Mercer County Community College. A Sunday doubleheader is on tap, with first pitch scheduled for noon.
