New Rochelle, NY – The Monroe University baseball team yielded nine runs in the eighth and ninth innings to fall to Rockland Community College, 12-4. The Fighting Hawks upended Monroe's five game winning streak with the road victory.
Trailing 3-2 late, the Mustangs bullpen gave up three runs in the eighth before dealing away six in the ninth to put themselves into an insurmountable hole. Monroe used six pitchers on the day, with freshman
Devin Ryan being dealt the loss.
On offense, freshman
Marcus Mercado continued to hit well, collecting a base knock and a double. Fellow freshman
Dirso Melendez also recorded two hits on the day.
Monroe fell behind in the first inning, but quickly responded thanks to an RBI double from freshman
Gavin Marchese — collecting his ninth hit of the current homestand. Despite falling behind again in the sixth, Mercado lifted the offense to within a run in the next frame.
From there, the Fighting Hawks rallied to put an end to Monroe's win streak.
The Mustangs will look to bounce back when they host Lackawanna College in a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
