New Rochelle, NY – The Monroe University baseball team increased its win streak to five games on Tuesday with a 10-2 victory over Rockland Community College.
Freshman
Gavin Marchese continued his strong stretch with another multi-hit performance. The Florida native, who started at the keystone on Tuesday, added a fabulous web gem in the third inning to his outing. Fellow freshmen
Jesus Nieves and
Marcus Mercado each had two hits too.
The Mustangs were in control from the jump as they threatened to score in the first. While no runs crossed home plate, the second inning saw the basepaths unload thanks to Nieves. After a sacrifice fly from freshman
Tai Vic Tromp, Nieves doubled in Mercado to make it 2-0.
After Monroe made it 4-0 in the next frame, Rockland answered with two runs of their own to put the pressure on the home team. But six consecutive runs scored thereafter proved to be the difference maker in the contest.
A four-run fifth put the threat at bay as Nieves singled in two more before freshman
Juan Garcia doubled down the right field line to score two and make it 8-2 in favor of the Mustangs.
Freshman
Kyle Mandirola earned the win during his time on the mound. He kept the Fighting Hawks silent through two innings, allowing no hits and striking out three batters.
Monroe will take on Rockland again on Thursday at 3:30 pm to complete the series.
