New Rochelle, NY – The Monroe University baseball team scored 31 runs on 27 hits across two games against Paramount Academy during its home opener on Saturday. After an early deficit, Monroe took game one, 10-2, before putting on an offensive clinic in game two, winning 21-0.
The opening matchup of the doubleheader saw five Mustangs record multi hits. Freshman
Alejandro Bernard led the way three RBIs. Freshmen
Gavin Marchese and
Juan Garcia, and sophomores
Ronald Almanzar and
Anthony Fernandez rounded out the multi-hit efforts.
Paramount Academy took a 1-0 lead in the first and while it took a bit for the Mustangs to round into form, a six-run fourth inning proved to be the difference maker.
After Bernard drove in two, freshman
Jesus Nieves tripled to score Marchese. Freshman
Marcus Mercado then singled in Nieves before Almanzar put the ball in play to score the sixth run of the inning.
On the mound, sophomore
Brailyn Cruz received the start, with freshman
Kyle Mandirola earning the win after hurling two no-hit innings after his breakout performance against Delaware Technical Community College last weekend.
In game two, a huge 11-run third inning dominated the Grizzlies. Marchese shined once again with four hits and four RBIs, coming a home run short of the cycle. Mercado, Nieves, Fernandez and Almanzar each recorded two hits in the final game of the day.
Freshman
Sebastian Rivera earned the start and threw two no-hit innings. Fellow freshman
Victor Ceballos earned the win in relief, while freshman
Carlos Pimentel closed out the ball game.
Monroe will stay in New Rochelle for its next matchup against Rockland Community College on Tuesday, March 4, at 3:30 pm.
