New Rochelle, NY – The Monroe University women's basketball team moved to 17-3 on the season with its 82-55 victory over Putnam Science Academy on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore
Qaizden Stephano led all scorers with 21 points on an impressive 10-for-13 clip. Freshmen
Carlota Lopez and
Sydney Huskey also recorded double-digit scoring days with 19 and 13 points, respectively.
Customary with Mustang victories this season, they controlled the turnover battle. Monroe forced 25 turnovers, scoring 35 points off those forced errors by Putnam Science. Six different Mustangs recorded multiple steals, with Huskey leading the way with four.
A 39-22 lead in the first half was indicative of the dominant display by the home team. Lopez racked up 13 first half points, while Stephano recorded 12. Stephano was consistent with six points in each of the first three quarters before scoring three in the final quarter across limited minutes.
Monroe continues to dominate the painted area as well, outscoring Putnam Science by 28 points. Highlighted by Stephano's solid day, the guards too had their way in the paint.
The Mustangs have won nine of their last ten and will have a quick turnaround against Harford Community College on Monday, February 10. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 pm.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE UNIVERSITY
The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 20 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as the Monroe University marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
