Florence, SC – The Monroe University baseball team dropped both games of its doubleheader against Florence-Darlington Technical College on Saturday. Game one went the way of the Stingers, 5-2, while game two was a 7-1 defeat.
Monroe once again got the bats going, but failed to generate runs as they were only outhit by four in both games combined. Sophomores
Anthony Fernandez and
Ronald Almanzar both recorded two hits on the day.
In game one, a solo home run by Almanzar gave the Mustangs the early lead. Freshman
Nair Jamanika added to that lead with a base knock in the third. But a swift three-run bottom half of the third gave Florence-Darlington enough of a cushion to take the opening matchup.
Freshman
Sebastian Rivera pitched all six innings, earning a quality start while striking out five.
Game two saw the Stingers jump out in front early, never letting the Mustangs back into the game despite only recording five hits in the contest. For Monroe, however, just three batters reached base via hit.
The Mustangs will next travel to Bel Air, MD, for a doubleheader against Harford Community College on Saturday, February 22, at 12:00 pm in hopes of earning their first win of 2025.
