New Rochelle, NY – The Monroe University women's basketball team returned to action on Saturday, defeating Niagara County Community College, 60-52, in its first game of the Monroe Mixer at the Monroe Athletic Complex.
Freshman
Sydney Huskey led all scorers with 16 points, with six of those coming from the free throw line. Freshman
Kaylyn Lelie recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while fellow freshman
Carlota Lopez dropped 11 points against the Thunderwolves.
It was close game throughout with all four quarters being decided by three points or less, but it was the Mustangs who controlled the pace of the game to prevail in a physical bout.
Niagara held an 8-7 late into the first quarter. Two buckets from Lelie, however, distanced the Mustangs enough to enter the second period with a three-point lead.
Another narrow victory in the quarter gave Monroe a 26-20 advantage as halftime commenced. Huskey scored seven of her points in the quarter, while the remaining eight were made up by four players.
The Thunderwolves prevailed in quarter number three, 16-15, but Monroe kept at it in the fourth to distance itself from the visitors. Sophomore
Nicole Bencosme was crucial in the late window, scoring six of her eight points in the quarter.
At 10-2, the Mustangs will next face-off against Raritan Valley Community College in the final game of the Monroe Mixer. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE UNIVERSITY
The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 20 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as the Monroe University marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
