Rockville, MD – Freshmen
Carlota Lopez and
Morgan Marshall of the No. 21 Monroe University women's basketball team combined for more than half of their teams' points in an impressive 84-28 win over Frederick Community College on Saturday afternoon.
Lopez and Marshall combined for 49 points, with both scoring career-highs. Lopez scored an efficient 27 points, going 9-for-13 from the field and 5-for-7 from three, while Marshall chipped in 22 along with nine assists.
This was a dominating performance from start to finish as the Mustangs competed in every category. They shot 50.8% compared to Frederick's 16%. They outrebounded the Cougars 33-24, including 13-4 on the offensive boards.
Freshman
Ariel Walker recorded double-digit rebounds (11) for the second time in three games. While sophomore
Alycia Secchiaroli and freshman
Zanaya Parsons added eight rebounds each.
The Mustangs also scored 29 points off turnovers compared to six from Frederick. Freshman
Sydney Huskey paced the Mustangs with five steals on the day.
At half, Monroe led Frederick, 39-13, and never looked back. A closer third quarter segued into a relentless fourth that saw the Mustangs outscore the Cougars, 28-2. The Mustangs limited the Cougars to zero made field goals in the period, while Lopez was a perfect 3-for-3 from the field.
Across three games to open the season, Monroe has allowed just 39 points per game. It will look to build on the impressive 3-0 start when they take on Montgomery College on Sunday at 3:00 pm to close out the Montgomery Tip-Off Tournament.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE UNIVERSITY

There are 20 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as the Monroe University marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I).
