No. 21 Women's Basketball Moves To 4-0 With 87-62 Win Over Montgomery

Rockville, MD – The No. 21 Monroe University women's basketball team moved to 4-0 on the season after defeating Montgomery College, 87-62, on Sunday afternoon to sweep the Montgomery Tip-Off Tournament. Four Mustangs scored in double figures, with freshman Sydney Huskey leading the way.

Huskey scored 19 points on 7-for-13 shooting, with fellow freshman Ariel Walker (15) and Carlota Lopez (14) joining the double-digit scoring barrage. Walker nearly reached a double-double as her strong season continues, while Lopez finished her strong weekend with 41 points.

Sophomore Alycia Secchiaroli rounded out the double-digit scorers with ten points. She also corralled 15 rebounds for the first double-double by a Mustang this season. Secchiaroli also blocked five shots, adding to her impressive stat line on Sunday.

It once again an early lead that blossomed into a final runaway for Monroe as it took a 25-13 lead after the first quarter. A 22-12 second quarter distanced the Mustangs even further as they entered the half in decisive control of the contest. Lopez led the way with 12 first half points.

In the second half, Montgomery pieced together a solid third quarter, winning the period, 18-16. But once again, Monroe's well-balanced play kept the game out of reach over the final ten minutes, with freshman Kaylyn Lelie chipping in eight points.

An impressive opening four games now sets the Mustangs up for their home opener on Tuesday, November 12 at 5:00 pm against SUNY Sullivan.
