Defense Powers No. 21 Women's Basketball To 67-38 Victory Over CCRI

Warwick, RI – The No. 21 Monroe University women's basketball team forced 33 turnovers in its 67-38 victory over the Community College of Rhode Island on Sunday afternoon. The Mustangs scored 34 points off turnovers, leading to the lopsided victory over the Knights.

Freshman Morgan Marshall paced the Mustangs with six steals, while fellow freshman Sydney Huskey made three thefts on the day. Six more Mustangs contributed to the steal category, resulting in 15 total for the visitors.

Huskey led the way with 15 points, Marshall contributed 12 points and sophomore Alycia Secchiaroli put together an 11-point, eight rebound outing.

The Mustangs once again dominated in the paint, outscoring their opponent 36-8. They scooped everything off the glass, both offensively and defensively. An impressive 23 offensive rebounds led to 22 second chance points.

Monroe didn't trail for a second straight outing and they took a comfortable lead after outscoring the Knights 23-9 in the opening ten minutes. Marshall was all over the court during her nine minutes of play, scoring eight points while also compiling four steals.

The lead would not relinquish as the half approached, with Monroe holding a 36-19 lead.

Monroe's defense continued to wreak havoc, forcing eight turnovers on the Knights in the third quarter. That tally was topped in the fourth as CCRI committed nine turnovers across the final ten minutes of action.

The Mustangs came into Rhode Island and dominated the tournament. They will participate in another tournament next weekend in Rockville, MD. The Montgomery Tip-Off Tournament will feature the Mustangs taking on Frederick Community College on Saturday, November 9, at 1:00 pm.
