Mustangs Women’s Basketball Wins Rematch at Raritan Valley in Up-and-Down Matchup

NORTH BRANCH, N.Y., January 30, 2024 – After last Thursday's matchup at the Monroe Athletic Complex came down to the wire, the rematch on Tuesday in New Jersey went back-and-forth throughout, but the Monroe College Mustangs women's basketball team got the last laugh with a big fourth quarter to defeat Raritan Valley Community College, 56-46. The Mustangs earn their seventh straight victory to improve to 14-6 overall, while the Lions drop to 18-4 after two straight losses to Monroe.
 
The Mustangs got off to a slow start, falling into an 18-9 hole after the first quarter. The second stanza saw a big turnaround for Monroe, as the visitors outscored the Lions, 20-8, to take a 29-26 advantage into halftime. The third quarter looked much like the first, with Raritan Valley pushing its way back into the lead, taking a 41-38 edge into the final frame. That was no worry for the Mustangs, as they completely took control in the fourth, outscoring the Lions, 18-5, to earn the 10-point victory.
 
Carlota Gomez-Alonso paced the team with 24 points in the win, adding six rebounds and five steals to a big night. Alycia Secchiaroli was next for Monroe with 10 points on the evening to go with six steals and five boards. Emma Wilson-Saltos pulled down a team-high 13 rebounds while scoring six points with five blocks, two assists and two steals. Nicole Bencosme led the team with five assists while tallying eight points.
 
The Mustangs are back on the road this Thursday, Feb. 1, when they visit Lackawanna College in Scranton, Pa., Thursday's tip-off is set for 5 p.m.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 20 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well the Monroe College marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
