SCRANTON, Pa., February 1, 2024 – The Monroe College Mustangs women's basketball team rolled to a 72-43 victory over Lackawanna College on Thursday, running the Mustangs' win streak to eight games. Monroe improves to 15-6 overall with the win, while the Falcons drop to 6-11.
The Mustangs and Falcons had a tight first quarter, with the Mustangs taking a narrow 20-19 lead into the second. The Mustangs then turned up the heat in the second quarter and never looked back after going up by double digits and taking a 16-point lead into halftime.
Emma Wilson-Saltos had an incredible 17-point, 16-rebound performance in the win, adding three blocks as well.
Carlota Gomez-Alonso totaled 16 points with five steals, three assists and three rebounds.
Shanelle Smith scored 14 points off the bench with four boards and four assists.
Nicole Bencosme contributed 13 points with a team-high eight assists and four rebounds.
Alycia Secchiaroli pulled down eight rebounds to go with six points and four assists.
The Mustangs will look to run their streak to nine this Sunday, Feb. 4, when they meet up with Niagara County Community College at a neutral site, Ithaca High School, in Ithaca, N.Y. Sunday's matchup is set for a 1 p.m. tip-off.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 20 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well the Monroe College marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
