Monroe Mustangs Track and Field Braves Poor Weather Conditions to Close Out Weekend at Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA, Pa., April 28, 2023 – Heavy rain poured down on the entire northeast region of the United States on Friday, and it was no different at Franklin Field during Day 2 of the 127th Penn Relays Presented by Toyota. That did not stop the competition, though, and the Monroe College Mustangs track and field team braved the storm to compete to the best of their abilities, turning in a number of courageous performances on the rain-soaked track.

Alyssa Dyett got the day started for the Mustangs in the 100-meter dash. She ran a time of 12.48 seconds. She got right back to it an hour later to compete in the triple jump event, registering a jump of 11.30 meters.

Next up was the men's sprint medley relay championships. The team of Kiron O'Garro, Vadley Sylvester, Tendai Nyoni and Wayne Stephenson clocked in with a time of 3:39.65.

The women's 4x400 relay was up next for Monroe. The foursome of Shaquka Tyrell, Vegonia Jean-Baptiste, Kahliyah Smith and Kayla Johnson ran hard to earn a time of 4:04.70, just a few seconds off of the qualifying standard for the NJCAA Div. I Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

The men's 4x400 relay closed out the day for Monroe. The team of Jaheim Dotson, Leroy Chapman, Nyoni and Prince Mcabelo finished fifth out of 17 teams on the evening with a time of 3:17.92, which missed the qualifying standard by just three-quarters of a second despite the incredibly challenging conditions.

The Mustangs have a trio of meets on the schedule for this upcoming week. The first of those will take place on Wednesday, May 3, down in Lynchburg, Va., when the Mustangs compete in the Liberty Twilight Qualifier, hosted by Liberty University.
