HOBBS, N.M.–Freshman Shaquane Toussaint of the men's outdoor track and field team earned a podium finish during day three of the 2026 NJCAA National Championships on Saturday, capping off a successful trip to Hobbs for the Mustangs.
On day one, three Mustangs competed in the 400m preliminary heats. Sophomore Modou Sanneh ran a time of 46.98, which narrowly missed the final. Freshman Shaquane Toussaint ran a time of 47.07 and sophomore Cleon Joseph ran a time of 49.12. On day two of the championships, the same two Mustangs returned to competition. Toussaint defied the odds of his #10 ranking in the 200m event and qualified for Saturday's final. He clocked a time of 20.26 seconds, which was not only a personal best but also the fastest time in program history. On day three, Toussaint placed fifth overall in the 200m final with a time of 20.37 seconds, earning USTFCCCA First-Team All-American honors.
Sophomore Cleon Joseph also had a historic performance in the 200m as well. Joseph ran a time of 20.77, which is not only a personal best time for him but also his performance. It qualified him for the World Athletics Under-20 Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon, scheduled for August 5–9.
Coach Greene's Comments:
"Words can't express how proud I am of these young men. This has been a historic season, which saw many PRs and school records broken; this is the joy and progress that any coach wants to see. This was also historic because it marked our final outdoor championship at the junior college level. I want to extend a special thanks to the coaching staff, our support staff, the parents, our athletic trainers, our athletic department, track alumni, well-wishers, and, most importantly, the athletes for their commitment, hard work, dedication, and various contributions throughout the entire season in maintaining the tradition of excellence."
With the outdoor season now complete, the Mustangs will take a couple of months off before kicking off the 2026 cross-country season with high expectations.
