Monroe Mustangs Men’s Volleyball Splits Exhibition Tri-Match at American International College

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., February 25, 2023 – The Monroe College Mustangs men's volleyball team competed against a pair of NCAA programs on Saturday in a tri-match at American International College's (AIC) Butova Gymnasium. The Mustangs fell in a tight three-set match against Widener University before defeating host AIC in three. The matches have no standing against Monroe's regular-season record or statistics.
 
MATCH 1: Widener 3, Monroe 0 (25-23, 31-29, 25-18)
The Mustangs and Pride played a very competitive match on Saturday, but Widener managed to come out on top in three close sets.
 
Joe Kieler led the Mustangs with 13 kills in the match, adding eight digs. Noah Liousfi threw down seven kills of his own, while Joan Galmes totaled six. Timothy Reyes dished out 31 assists, picked up nine digs and had two blocks. Moises Jimenez led the team with 13 digs, while Michael Pena scooped up 10. Devounte Bennett made five blocks.
 
MATCH 2: Monroe 3, American International 0 (26-24, 25-23, 25-18)
Match 2 of the day played similarly to Monroe's opener for the day, with the Mustangs coming out on top in three close sets this time around against the host Yellow Jackets.
 
Reyes had a terrific match with another 31 assists, 12 digs and four blocks. Jimenez moved to the outside and led the team with 11 kills in the win over AIC. He also had three blocks. Kieler had another nine kills in the win. Arnau Riu Giralt picked up nine digs. Bennett had another five blocks, while Liousfi had four.
 
The Mustangs will get back to NJCAA action on Friday, March 3, when they visit Middlesex College in Edison, N.J. Friday's match is set to begin at 6 p.m.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well the Monroe College marching band and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 11 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
