EDISON, N.J., March 3, 2023 – The Monroe College Mustangs men's volleyball team was back on the road on Friday, visiting Middlesex College for the first time. The Mustangs came away with a three-set victory, improving an unblemished 9-0 on the season. The Colts drop to 3-5 after the match.
The Mustangs got the match off to a strong start, trotting out to a 9-3 lead on the Colts before a 6-0 run later had Monroe up, 15-5, in the opening set. The Mustangs kept their distance from their hosts, pushing the lead out to 12 points at 22-10 before wrapping up the opening frame with a 25-14 win to take a 1-0 lead.
The Colts bounced back with a big start in the second set, taking a 7-2 advantage on the Mustangs. The lead was 13-8 before Monroe rattled off six straight points to go up, 14-13. The Colts jumped back into the lead at 16-15, but the Mustangs made another big run with another six in a row to go ahead, 21-16. Middlesex took 4-of-5 to get back within two, but the Mustangs scored the next two to reach set point. The Colts kept the Mustangs on their toes with two points to keep the set going, but the Mustangs claimed the final point to pick up a 25-22 win to go up two sets.
The Mustangs looked to be back in their comfort zone in the third stanza, taking an early 11-5 advantage on the Colts. After the home team cut the deficit to 12-8, Monroe put the dagger in the match with a 6-0 run to go up by 10. The teams traded points back-and-forth the rest of the way, seeing the Mustangs close out the evening with a 25-15 victory.
Joe Kieler led the team with six kills on the evening, adding three aces, a block and four digs to a solid night.
Michael Pena was next with five kills.
Joan Galmes did a little of everything with three kills, four aces, a block and a team-high eight digs.
Timothy Reyes handed out 23 assists, adding a block and seven digs as well as three kills.
Moises Jimenez had three kills to go with six digs.
The Mustangs get back to work next week when they take a short trip down to Cranford, N.J. to visit Union College on Wednesday, March 8. Wednesday's match is set to begin at 6 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well the Monroe College marching band and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 11 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
