NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., November 9, 2023 – The home crowd at the Monroe Athletic Complex got a good look at the Monroe College Mustangs women's basketball team on Thursday, as the Mustangs took down SUNY Ulster, 70-48. The Mustangs improve to 2-1 overall with the win, while SUNY Ulster drops to 0-1.
Both the Mustangs and Senators struggled to find a rhythm early in the first quarter, with a bucket by
Carlota Gomez-Alonso accounting for the only two points through the first four minutes of the game. The Mustangs began to roll with two layups from
Kyah Nowlin, taking a 9-0 lead after Gomez-Alonso drained a three. It was all Mustangs until the final second of the period, as they went up, 20-2, before a Bryanna Sanders jumper for Ulster sent the game to the second with Monroe up, 20-4.
The Senators opened the second on a 6-1 run to make it a 21-10 game. The Mustangs completely turned the tables from then on, netting the next 16 points, half of which was scored by Gomez-Alonso, to take a 37-10 lead. Once again, the Senators got a bucket right before the buzzer, sending the game to halftime with Monroe on top, 37-12.
Gomez-Alonso led all scorers with 16 points in the first half, filling up the stat sheet with eight rebounds, five steals and three assists as well.
Alycia Secchiaroli tallied eight points with three boards in the first half.
Emma Wilson-Saltos added seven points and five rebounds.
A three by Gomez-Alonso early in the third had Monroe up, 42-13. The Mustangs later scored six straight to push their lead to 33 points. The Senators then went on a run, scoring nine in a row to cut the deficit to 48-24, but the Mustangs scored 4-of-6 in the final two minutes to take a 52-26 advantage into the fourth.
Sharon Brown hit a couple threes early in the fourth that put Monroe up, 58-28. A pair of twos by Secchiaroli bookended five points for the Senators, who later went on an 8-0 run to cut the deficit back down to 20. Monroe followed up with five straight late in the quarter. The Senators scored the game's final three points, wrapping up a 70-48 win for Monroe.
Gomez-Alonso registered a double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds in the win, adding five steals and three assists for a strong night. Secchiaroli totaled 16 points, four boards and a pair of steals. Wilson-Saltos tallied 11 points and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds. Brown totaled seven points, eight rebounds and five assists in the game. Nowlin added eight points, five steals, five rebounds and three assists.
The Mustangs shot 45.8 percent (27-of-59) from the field in the win, holding the Senators to 19-of-56 shooting (33.9 percent) on the night. Monroe outrebounded the Senators, 57-38.
The Mustangs are back on the road this weekend for the Montgomery College Tip-off Tournament in Rockville, Md. The Mustangs open the weekend on Saturday, Nov. 11, when they take on Frederick Community College at 1 p.m.
