ROCKVILLE, Md., November 12, 2023 – The first day of the Montgomery College Tip-Off Tournament proved fruitful for the Monroe College Mustangs women's basketball team, as the Mustangs defeated Frederick Community College, 71-64, for their third straight victory. The Mustangs improve to 3-1 overall, while the Cougars fall to 0-3.
It was another huge game for
Carlota Gomez-Alonso, as the sophomore dropped 21 points in the win, securing a double-double with a team-high 17 rebounds while adding five assists, a block and a steal.
Sharon Brown contributed 15 points and team highs of six assists and two steals.
Kyah Nowlin tallied 14 points off the bench and pulled down six boards.
Alycia Secchiaroli registered her first double-double of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
The Mustangs had a significant advantage on the boards in Saturday's win, outrebounding the Cougars, 55-33. They also outscored Frederick, 28-22, in the paint. Offensive rebounds played a big role as well, as the Mustangs had 15 second-chance points compared to just four for the Cougars.
The Mustangs wrap up the weekend on Sunday, Nov. 12, when they take on host Montgomery College. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 20 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well the Monroe College marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
