CATONSVILLE, Md., November 6, 2023 – Head Coach
Camille McLellan and the Monroe College Mustangs women's basketball team earned the first victory of the new era of Mustangs women's basketball on Sunday, defeating Chesapeake College, 70-60, at CCBC Catonsville. The Mustangs improve to 1-1 on the early season with the win, while the Skipjacks drop to 0-1.
Monroe's returning sophomores both had huge games in the Mustangs' first win of the season.
Carlota Gomez-Alonso produced a double-double with 23 points and 11 rebounds, adding five assists and a block in a terrific game.
Emma Wilson-Saltos also registered a double-double with 18 points and a ridiculous 25 rebounds. She added four blocks, three steals and two assists in a dominant effort.
Kyah Nowlin provided a spark off the bench in Sunday's victory. She contributed 16 points with six rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals.
Sharon Brown filled up the stat sheet with seven points, eight boards, three assists and two steals.
Alycia Secchiaroli added five points and five rebounds.
Nicole Bencosme may have only scored one point, but she provided seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. The Mustangs significantly outrebounded their opponents, 66-31.
Monroe's next contest will be the Mustangs' home opener on Thursday, Nov. 9, when they host SUNY Ulster at the Monroe Athletic Complex. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 20 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well the Monroe College marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
