HUTCHINSON, Kan., May 19, 2022 – Chinenye Onuorah earned her spot in the finals of the 400-meter dash to highlight the first day of the 2022 NJCAA Div. I Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Hutchinson Community College's Gowans Stadium for the Monroe College Mustangs track and field team on Thursday.
 
Onuorah provided the top moment of the day for the Mustangs on Thursday. She finished sixth overall in the preliminary round of the 400m with a personal-best time of 55.22 seconds, setting a new Monroe College record in the event as well as earning her a spot in Saturday's finals of the event.
 
The Mustangs began the day with the men's 4x800 relay finals. The Mustang team of Karim Belmahdi, Jonathan Hackshaw, Wail Bourahli and Mohlouwa Koos Molutsi clocked in with a time of 7:49.85 to take ninth place out of 19 competing teams in the event.
 
Tyhir Jones, Javel Best and Matthew Paul all competed in the preliminary round of the men's 400-meter dash on Thursday. Jones was the first Monroe finisher with a personal-best time of 48.46 seconds. Best was next at a career-best time of 48.60 seconds. Paul was close behind at 49.80 seconds.
 
Day 2 of the 2022 NJCAA Div. I Outdoor Track & Field Championships will feature the Mustang women and men competing across seven different events. The day begins for Monroe at 2 p.m. EST.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 14 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
