PHILADELPHIA, Pa., April 29, 2022 – Participating in the 126th running of the prestigious Penn Relays,
Karim Belmahdi represented the No. 22-ranked Monroe College Mustangs men's track and field team when he competed in Thursday evening's run of the 3,000-meter steeplechase event.
Running the event for the second time this season, Belmahdi made a big improvement to his time, running a season and career best time of 9:09.40 on Thursday. This marks a nine-second improvement on his previous time in the event, further improving his qualifying mark for the 2022 NJCAA Div. I Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Belmahdi now stands third in the NJCAA this season in the 3000m steeplechase, while his time is the second-fastest in Monroe College history behind Katleho Dyoyi's 9:06.62 from back in 2014.
The Mustangs are off for the rest of the week, and get back to work on Saturday, May 7, when they compete in the Tom Farrell Classic, hosted by St. John's University.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 14 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
