LOCH SHELDRAKE, N.Y., March 25, 2022 – A late comeback was not enough for the Monroe College Mustangs baseball team on Friday, as the Mustangs dropped a 5-4 decision in 10 innings to SUNY Sullivan at The Diamond at Generals Park. The Mustangs fall to 8-14 overall with the loss, while the Generals improve to 5-10.
Â
The Mustangs jumped into the lead in the top of the second on Friday.
Salix Felix led off the inning by reaching on an error, and then
Luis Tejada drew a walk to get two runners on. After both runners were successful on stolen base attempts,
Kristopher Salinas knocked them both in with a two-out single to right, giving the Mustangs a 2-0 edge.
Â
The Generals had a runner on third with two outs in the bottom of the fifth. Layton Cuvilier took advantage, hitting a double to right to bring in the home team's first run of the game and make it a 2-1 game.
Â
Giovanni Diaz immediately tied the game in the bottom of the sixth with a solo homer to left, bringing the score to an even 2-2. The Generals later took the lead with a little luck in the bottom of the seventh. With runners on second and third and two outs, a wild pitch brought in the runner from third, putting Sullivan up, 3-2. The Generals then made it four straight frames with a run in the eighth when Yorby Vilomar hit a sacrifice fly to make it a 4-2 lead for the Generals heading to the ninth.
Â
Jaison Andujar walked to lead off the ninth for Monroe.
Miguel Toribio then came on to pinch hit and reached on an error in left field that brought Andujar around to score and left Toribio on second base as the tying run.
Angel De La Cruz also pinch hit in the next at-bat, during which Toribio moved to third on a wild pitch. De La Cruz then walked to put runners on the corners with nobody out. Salinas grounded into a fielder's choice, but it was enough to plate Toribio from third, tying the game at 4-4.
Â
Cuvilier led off the bottom of the 10th for the Generals by reaching on an error that immediately put him on second base. Andrew Schneider then sacrificed him over to third, putting the winning run 90 feet away. After Diaz was intentionally walked, Evan Collazo hit a single toward third, bringing in Cuvilier to walk it off with a 5-4 win for the home team.
Â
Leroy Evangelista got the win for the Generals in relief to improve to 1-0 on the season.
Albert Bobadilla took the loss in relief for Monroe to fall to 1-2.
Grant Goodlad went six frames in the start for Monroe, allowing just two runs with nine strikeouts.
Â
Salinas knocked in three runs for the Mustangs after hitting 1-for-4 on Friday. Alvarez batted 1-for-5 with a double. Andujar went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Castro hit 2-for-5 in the game.
Â
The Mustangs will look to turn it around on Saturday, March 26, when they take on Rockland Community College in a doubleheader at Nyack High School in Nyack, N.Y. Game 1 is set to begin at 3 p.m.
