NYACK, N.Y., March 26, 2022 – Saturday's scheduled doubleheader between the Monroe College Mustangs baseball team and Rockland Community College at Nyack High School did not get to complete even five full innings due to inclement weather, but Game 1 got through just enough frames to be deemed official, seeing the Mustangs drop a 6-3 decision to the Hawks.
Â
The Hawks got an early jump on the Mustangs in the bottom of the first, taking advantage of errors and walks to eventually put four runs on the board. Rockland then got two more runs in the bottom of the second for quick 6-0 advantage.
Â
The Mustangs began working their way back into the game in the top of the fourth.
Andres Castro hit a leadoff double, and then
Dante Paolucci drew a walk.
Salix Felix hit into a fielder's choice that left runners on first and third.
Jaison Andujar then flew out to center, deep enough for a sacrifice fly to bring Castro home and get Monroe on the board.
Nathaniel Alvarez then ripped a double to right to bring in Felix and make it a 6-2 game.
Angel De La Cruz followed with an RBI single to center, bringing Alvarez home to cut the deficit in half at 6-3.
Â
Unfortunately, the Mustangs only had one more opportunity after the fourth before the game was called during the bottom of the fifth frame after the skies opened up, making the field unplayable after the weather cleared up. With the Mustangs having batted in the fifth, the game was official.
Â
Pedro Duran shouldered the loss for the Mustangs to drop to 1-2 on the year. Jake Confrey picked up the win for Rockland, while Will Sullo earned his first save after a scoreless fifth inning in relief.
Â
Alvarez hit 1-for-2 with an RBI double and a run scored in the game. De La Cruz also went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Castro batted 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
Pedro Crespo hit 1-for-3, while Paolucci and
Kristopher Salinas each went 1-for-2.
Â
The Mustangs will look to turn things around on Tuesday, March 29, when they take a trip to Bel Air, Md., to play two at East District foe Harford Community College. Game 1 is set to begin at 2 p.m.
