NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., December 5, 2022 – The Monroe College Mustangs women's basketball team took on one of the top prep programs in the region in Putnam Science Academy (PSA) on Monday, falling by a score of 86-73 at the Monroe Athletic Complex. The Mustangs drop to 6-5 overall with Monday's defeat.
Monroe fell into an early hole when PSA jumped out to a 9-1 lead over the first three minutes of the game. Monroe got back within six at 12-6, but the visitors responded with nine straight to go up, 21-6. PSA closed out the first quarter with a 9-3 run to take a 30-11 edge into the second quarter.
A 10-0 run early in the second for PSA put the visiting team up, 40-13. The teams then went back-and-forth for the remainder of the half, sending the game to the break with Putnam Science ahead, 55-28.
Monroe began to chip away at the deficit later in the third quarter, going on a 10-4 run over the final 2:23 to trail, 74-50, heading to the fourth. Monroe got within 18 points after eight straight midway through the fourth. The lead hit 20 again with 1:44 to play, but the Mustangs scored the final seven points of the game to get within 13 points before running out of time.
Naomi Barnwell and Carlota Alonso-Gomez matched with 16 points in the game, with both getting the job done at the free-throw line. Barnwell made 10-of-11 chances from the charity stripe, while Gomez-Alonso made all eight of her attempts. Gomez-Alonso added eight rebounds and a team-high seven steals.
Emma Wilson-Saltos was big on the boards with 13 rebounds, tallying seven points as well.
Aysia Pink scored 10 points with five boards in the game.

The Mustangs will look to quickly move on from Monday's defeat when they get back to work on Tuesday, Dec. 6, at nearby Westchester Community College. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well the Monroe College marching band and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 11 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
