BRONX, N.Y., November 29, 2022 – A dominant first half helped the Monroe College Mustangs women's basketball team defeated NJCAA Div. III No. 1 Hostos Community College by a score of 69-42 Tuesday evening at The Swamp. The Mustangs improve to 6-4 overall with the win, while the Caimans take their first loss of the season to drop to 5-1.
The Mustangs had a big lead after the first quarter, outscoring the Caimans, 20-6. A 22-14 edge in the second frame left Monroe on top, 42-20, at the halftime break. The Mustangs played just above even with the Caimans the rest of the way to pick up the 27-point road victory.
Amiyah Edney-Holmes led the Mustangs with 13 points on the evening. Naomi Barnwell was next with 11 points, adding two rebounds and two steals. Olivia Medford and Aysia Pink each tallied 10 points in the win. Khalia Bryant came off the bench to lead the team with 10 rebounds, adding six points as well. Sara Carvajal-Caro totaled six points, six rebounds and two blocks.
The Mustangs take another break from game action and get back to it on Monday, Dec. 5, when they host Putnam Science Academy at the Monroe Athletic Complex. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well the Monroe College marching band and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 11 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
