Monroe Mustangs Women’s Basketball Hangs Tough with No. 2 Northwest Florida State

PANAMA CITY, Fla., November 18, 2022 – Taking on the No. 2-ranked team in the NJCAA in Northwest Florida State College on Friday, the Monroe College Mustangs women's basketball team gave the Raiders a run for their money, but a big third quarter for the Raiders proved to be the difference, as the Mustangs fell, 75-63, at Gulf Coast State College. The Mustangs fall to 5-3 overall with the loss, while the Raiders remain unbeaten at 5-0.

The Mustangs trailed, 21-10, after the first quarter, but chipped away at the lead in the second to go into the half down by just six at 34-28. The Raiders had a strong third quarter, outscoring the Mustangs, 31-13, to go up, 65-41. Monroe battled back and outscored the Raiders by 12 in the fourth, but it was not enough to erase the deficit.

Olivia Medford led Monroe with 16 points in the game, adding six rebounds as well. Naomi Barnwell picked up 10 points and matched Tanae Arnold with a team-high five assists. Amiyah Edney-Holmes added eight points and a pair of assists. Emma Wilson-Saltos totaled six points and six boards. Khalia Bryant pulled down seven rebounds to lead the team.

The Mustangs will have another shot at the Raiders in a couple of weeks when they make another trip down to Florida in early December. The rematch will take place at Northwest Florida State on Friday, Dec. 9.

The Mustangs have one more big test this weekend, when they take on No. 7 Gulf Coast State College on Saturday, Nov. 19. Tip-off for tomorrow's contest is set for 2 p.m. EST.
