FALL RIVER, Mass., September 9, 2017 - The Monroe College junior varsity men's soccer team hit the road to challenge the Bayhawks of Bristol Community College, and came out on top, 4-1, to earn its first win of the season and the first career win for head coach
Jonathan Avila.
Kashane Ashmeade tallied the first goal of the game for the Mustangs off a feed from Homayoun Alidad.
Sergio Escribano followed with a penalty-kick score for Monroe's second goal of the day. Escribano scored again after an assist from
Jordi Castany for Monroe's third of the afternoon. Ashmeade got on the board once more off a helper from
Aldain Jeffers to wrap up the scoring for the Mustangs.
Johan Bermeo started the game and allowed just one goal in the first half to pick up his first win of the year.
Illia Loukissas came on in the second half and did not allow a goal to help the Mustangs hang on.
The Mustangs will next play on Tuesday, Sept. 12, when they host the Monroe College Express in their first-ever meeting at City Park. The marquee Monroe vs. Monroe matchup is set to kick off at 7 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's rugby, and the newly added club women's rugby team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, will have six teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level beginning in the fall of 2017.
