NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., October 1, 2019 – In the first intra-campus matchup of the season between the Monroe College Mustangs JV men's soccer team and the Monroe College Express JV team went the way of the Mustangs on Tuesday, as they defeated the Express, 3-0, at Skidelsky Field at Flowers Park. The Mustangs improve to 1-3-2 on the year with the win.
 
The game was scoreless heading into halftime after the two teams' goalies combined for five first-half saves. Mickel Scott broke the scoreless time at the 57:31 mark in the second half, putting the Mustangs up, 1-0. Sebastian Marin doubled the lead for the Mustangs in the 70th minute off an assist from Scott, and then Scott added one more goal just 30 seconds later to reach the 3-0 final score.
 
Christian Vargas played all 90 minutes in net for the Mustangs, making four saves to pick up the shutout victory and improve to 1-0. Express goalkeeper George Opoku-Achempong made seven saves but allowed three goals to take the loss.
 
The Mustangs held a 14-6 advantage in shots in the game, including a 10-4 margin in shots on goal. The Express had a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
 
The Mustangs will visit Western Connecticut State University JV on Thursday, Oct. 3, in Danbury, Conn. The game is set to kick off at 8 p.m.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 12 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
