Mustangs JV Men’s Soccer Defeats Monroe Express on Hypolite’s Late Goal

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y, September 12, 2017 – In the first-ever Monroe Mustangs vs. Monroe Express contest in the new era of Monroe College athletics, the Monroe Mustangs junior varsity men's soccer team came out on top at City Park, 1-0, thanks Clyford Hypolite's late goal. The Mustangs improve to 2-1 on the season, while the Express fall to 0-2 after the tough matchup.

Hypolite took advantage of a miscue by the Express to net the game-winner in the 77th minute. As the Mustangs pushed the ball up the field, the Express managed to take it away, but as the defender attempted to send it back to goalkeeper Sergio Servin, his pass went wide of the netminder and right to Hypolite in front of the goal, where he redirected it into the back of the net for the only score of the game.

Both teams had their fair share of opportunities throughout the match, but until Hypolite's score, they were all stymied by respective goalkeepers or shot wide of the net. Mustang keeper Illia Loukissas saved the game in the 83rd minute when he came out of the net to go one-on-one with the Express's Balvin West, who had already sped past the entire Mustang defense. Loukissas took the shot head on, and made the stop on the speedy forward's blast to keep the Express off the board.

Loukissas got the win after stopping four shots and keeping the Express scoreless on Tuesday. Servin took the loss despite a strong performance that included four saves.

The Mustangs managed 13 shots on the evening, while the Express fired off seven. The Mustangs also earned seven corner kicks compared to four for the Express.

The Monroe Mustangs JV team next plays on Tuesday, Sept. 19, when they visit American International College in Springfield, Mass. Game time is set for 4 p.m. The Express look forward to a matchup at Queensborough Community College on Thursday, Sept. 14. That one will also kick off at 4 p.m.
