New Rochelle, N.Y. – The Monroe College JV Basketball team closed out its regular season with a 12-16 record by splitting its final two games this week. They fell to Bronx Community College, 88-63, on Thursday and defeated Liberation Prep, 70-62, in the finale at home on Saturday.
The Mustangs fought hard in their game against Bronx CC, with particularly strong performances from
Kenwyn Christian, who scored a career-high 21 points on 10-of-12 shooting, and
Andre Morgan, who finished with eight points and 11 rebounds.
The game with Liberation Prep was the Sophomore Day game for the JV team, and
Lamontrell Rice was honored prior to tip-off. The game was back-and-forth in the first half, with Monroe ahead, 33-32, at the break. The Mustangs pushed the lead up to 10 points in the second half before Liberation rallied. They pulled within 66-62 with 1:31 remaining.
A basket from
Kaynaan Longley off a Morgan miss with :30 left sealed the win. Christian made a bucket in the closing seconds as Monroe sent Rice out a winner in his final game, 70-62.
Mario Hernandez led the team with 17 points. Christian totaled 13 points. Longley had nine,
Brian Kennedy had 15, and Morgan finished with 12.
The Monroe College JV basketball team will begin the postseason on Thursday, March 9, against an opponent to be determined at a later date.
