New Rochelle, NY – After trailing by 20 with just over nine minutes to play, the Monroe University JV men's basketball team embarked on a 38-10 to close the game to shock 238 Academy, 91-83, on Tuesday.
A traditional three-point play from 238 Academy with 10:10 left on the clock put Monroe in a treacherous position. Down 73-53, the Mustangs began to chip away, kicking off the spirited late-game run with a patented three-pointer by sophomore
Luther Reid Jr.
Two lay-ins from sophomore
Armani Walker and an additional three-pointer from Reid Jr. made it a 12-point contest — the lowest the deficit had been since the start of the second half.
Freshman
Ariel Font and sophomore
Amarion Berry joined in on the late surge, with freshman
Jamell Williams punctuating a massive 16-0 run with a three to make it 75-72 in favor of 238 Academy with 5:14 remaining.
Berry eventually made it a one-point game with 2:36 remaining with a shoot from deep before Font gave Monroe its first lead of the contest. A three by Reid Jr. and a traditional three-point play by Williams put the Mustangs ahead by five with a minute to go and proved to be the nail in the coffin for 238 Academy.
Williams scored all 12 of his points in the second half, while Reid Jr. scored 11 as he played the entire second half. On the night, the Georgia native led the team with 23 points, with five other Mustangs, including Williams, joined Reid Jr. in double figures.
The comeback victory was indicative of how well the Mustangs have been playing down the stretch. They will look to keep the winning ways going when they take on the County College of Morris on Saturday, February 8, at 2:00 pm.
