New Rochelle, NY – The Monroe University JV men's basketball team concluded its season on Sunday in a 70-62 victory over Howard Community College JV. The Mustangs finished the season at 15-12, including winning eight of their last 11.
On sophomore day, sophomore
Turone Kelley Jr. led the team with 21 points. Freshman
DJ Collins frequently got the Mustangs out of offensive funks with his 15 points on the day, which included four made threes.
It was at tale of two halves for the Mustangs as they put up 43 points in the opening half before dropping to 27 in the second half. Despite the second half struggles, the team played well enough defense to keep the Dragons at bay and secure the win.
Back-to-back threes by Collins put the Mustangs up 12 midways through the half. That lead persisted throughout the remainder of the opening 20 minutes, with Kelley Jr. sinking a jumper to close out the half and give Monroe a 43-29 lead at the break.
Both teams were scoreless for a nearly five-minute stretch in the second half, but as much of a lid was on the rim for Monroe, it was the same for Howard. Monroe forced 11 turnovers in the second half as it hung on for the final game victory.
