CALDWELL, N.J.–Junior newcomer Zachary Roome of the Monroe University men's cross-country team highlighted a tremendous day of competition at the Caldwell Chase Invite on Friday afternoon. In the first 8K race of the season, Roome placed first overall in Friday's meet with a time of 28:20.4, defeating runners from STAC, Felician, Pace, Dominican, and Caldwell Universities.Â
Freshman Daniel El-Lakkis was next for the Mustangs, crossing the finish line with a time of 33:28.5 in his first-ever 8K race. He was followed by freshman Jordan Emile (39:32.6), who was also making his 8K debut. Sophomore Jazir Harris capped off the event for Monroe with a time of 39:36.0.
"Today's course was very challenging and hilly. I am very proud of these guys who took on today's challenge," said head coach Shirvon Greene. "It was a tough way to debut in their first 8K of the season; along with the terrain, they had to battle hot weather. I am happy and proud of the strength and resilience they showed on the course. They showed toughness and grit. This is definitely a step in the right direction. As our team motto says, 'KEEP SHOWING UP,' and that's exactly what they did today."
Monroe's next race is scheduled for Saturday, September 26, at the Golden Eagle Invite in Stony Brook, N.Y.
