NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Monroe University softball team (21-17 overall) captured a pair of wins against Cecil College (14-8 overall) by scores of 12-11 and 12-0 on Sunday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 1)
·     The Mustangs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning off a solo inside the park home run by Gabriella Pugliese.
·     Then in the bottom of the second inning, the Mustangs added two more runs off an error and a single to the shortstop by Reese Surratt, giving the Mustangs a 3-0 lead.
·     Cecil came back in the top of the third inning, as they launched a two-run inside the park home run, cutting the Mustangs' lead to 3-2.
·     In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Mustangs added another run coming off a stolen base to give them a 4-2 lead.
·     Then in the top of the fifth inning, Cecil took the lead on a pair of inside the park home runs, scoring four runs to give them a 6-4 lead.
·     The Mustangs answered with a two-run inside-the-park home run by Veronika Anderson in the bottom of the fifth inning to even the game at 6-6.
·     In the top of the sixth inning, Cecil added four runs off three RBI singles, which included a two-run single to give them a 10-6 lead.
·     Then in the bottom of the sixth inning, Reese Surratt singled through the left side, scoring a run to narrow the Cecil lead to 10-7.
·     In the same inning, Amanda Reyes ripped a triple to left center, scoring Surratt which cut the Cecil lead to 10-8.
·     In the top of the seventh inning, Cecil added a run on an RBI double to give them an 11-8 lead.
·     Then the Mustangs' comeback began in the top of the seventh off a Sophia Davis RBI double to left field, scoring a run to narrow the Cecil lead to 11-9.
·     Kerris Johnson shortly followed with a two-RBI single of her own to center field, scoring two runs to tie the game 11-11.
·     Reyes then knocked in the game-winning single to left field, scoring Johnson to give the Mustangs the 12-11 win.
Game 2
·     Lizbeth Zambrano opened the scoring for the Mustangs in the bottom of the first inning with an RBI single, scoring a run to put the Mustangs ahead 1-0.
·     In the same inning, an error at first base scored Zambrano to give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead.
·     In the bottom of the second inning, Johnson singled to left field, scoring a run to put the Mustangs ahead 3-0.
·     The Mustangs added three more runs in the bottom of the second inning off an RBI single, ground out, and a stolen base, putting the Mustangs ahead 6-0.
·     In the bottom of the third inning, the Mustangs tacked on five more runs off an Anaya Sanchez single, a Surratt RBI double, and an Alexis Ortiz single, putting the Mustangs ahead 11-0.
·     The Mustangs sealed the 12-0 victory off an error by the third baseman, which scored in the winning run in the bottom of the fourth inning.
STATS AND NOTES
·     The Mustangs lead the all-time series 2-0 against Cecil.
·     In game two, Jaleila Aupont had a strong outing in the circle, going all five innings, allowing just three hits and zero runs while striking out nine batters.
·     This is the ninth and tenth time the Mustangs have tallied 12 or more runs in a game this season.
·     Kerris Johnson upped her hitting streak to nine by going 2-3 in game one and 2-2 in game two.
·     In game one, the Mustangs tallied two home runs, which is the sixth time this season they've had multiple homers in a single game.
·     Prior to the first game, the Mustangs recognized their 10 sophomores as they celebrated their Sophomore Day.
