CATONSVILLE, Md.–The Monroe University softball team (19-17 overall) split its series with CCBC-Catonsville (15-14 overall) by scores of 10-11 in the first game and 9-1 in the second game on Friday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 1)
·     The Mustangs opened the game with a run off a sacrifice fly by Gabriella Pugliese, scoring a run to put the Mustangs ahead 1-0 in the top of the first.
·     Then in the bottom of the first inning, the Cardinals added three runs coming off a bases-loaded walk and a two-RBI single to give them a 3-1 lead.
·     In the top of the third inning, Lizbeth Zambrano ripped an RBI single to right field, scoring a run to cut the Cardinals' lead to 3-2.
·     In the bottom of the third inning, the Cardinals added a run off an RBI single to center field, increasing their lead to 4-2.
·     Then in the bottom of the fourth inning, a bases-loaded walk, an RBI ground out, a two-RBI double, and an error gave the Cardinals a 9-2 lead.
·     They added one more run in the inning off an RBI single, giving the Cardinals a 10-2 lead.
·     In the top of the fifth inning, Veronika Anderson launched an RBI double to right-center field, cutting the Cardinals' lead to 10-3.
·     Later in the inning Carsyn O'Daniels reached first on an error which scored Anderson to narrow the Cardnials lead to 10-4.
·     Shortly after, Sophia Davis launched a three-run home run to center field, thus putting the Mustangs behind only 10-7.
·     In the bottom of the fifth inning, an RBI groundout gave the Cardinals a 11-7 lead.
·     In the top of the sixth inning, an RBI double by Kerris Johnson closed the Cardinals' lead to 11-8.
·     Later in the inning, an RBI single by Veronika Anderson gave the Mustangs its ninth run of the game, cutting the Cardinals' lead to 11-9.
·     The Mustangs' last run of the game came in the same inning off an RBI single by Richeilys Rodriguez to result in the 11-10 loss.
Game 2
·     Zambrano began the scoring for the Mustangs in the top of the first inning off an RBI single to put the Mustangs ahead 1-0.
·     Then in the top of the second inning, Johnson reached first on a fielder's choice, scoring a run to give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead.
·     The Cardinals answered in the bottom of the third inning with a solo home run to cut the Mustangs' lead to 2-1.
·     Then in the top of the fourth inning, O'Daniels ripped a double to left field, scoring a run to give the Mustangs a 3-1 lead.
·     Later in the inning, Davis launched an RBI single which scored a run to increase the Mustangs' lead to 4-1.
·     The Mustangs added four more runs in the inning off an error, sacrifice fly, and two-RBI single to increase the Mustangs' lead to 8-1.
·     The Mustangs sealed the win in the top of the seventh inning off an O'Daniel's RBI single to give the Mustangs the 9-1 win.
STATS AND NOTES
·     With today's split series, the all-time series remains tied at 4-4.
·     Zoe Thomson had a dominate game in game two, going all-seven innings, allowing just one run, while striking out three batters and allowing only three hits. Her record improved to 3-1 for the year.
·     Three players had two-RBIs in game two featuring Pugliese, Zambrano, and O'Daniels.
·     Davis tallied her seventh home run of the season, which was her first since March 21.
UP NEXT
·     The Mustangs return home on Sunday, April 12, when they host Cecil College. Game-time is set for 1:00 p.m. They will also honor their 10 sophomores on Sophomore Day prior to the game.
